In second place is the Netherlands UEFA Euro 1988 home shirt, which became popular after the country won its only major international trophy. It recently sold for £400 and has been worn by Dutch greats such as Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten.

Maxine McCreadie, a spokesperson at UK Debt Expert, said: "As fans across the world prepare for the World Cup, it could be a great time for enthusiasts to look at the value of their collections amid the nostalgia wave. While friendly rivalry often starts with supporters reliving their favourite tournament moments, today’s fans are facing record-high prices just to look the part, with official 2026 replica shirts now retailing for as much as £125."

She added: "For many, digging out an old kit can hold sentimental value and retro shirts have become fashion items in their own right, so for those fortunate enough to own a history-rich shirt, it can represent an opportunity to generate some extra cash. To uncover the true value of your shirts, make sure you’re checking similar items recently sold online. Be sure to highlight unique details like manufacturer tags, player signatures, or specific tournament editions, as these factors are what drive the highest auction prices."
