A taste test of supermarket garlic breads has crowned M&S as the winner, despite its unappealing appearance. The trial, conducted by a consumer, compared garlic bread from M&S, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, and Tesco, with surprising results.
M&S garlic slices, priced at £1.30 for six (22p per slice), had a near-perfect texture—soft in the middle with a crunchy crust. However, the flavour was very garlicky and salty, requiring a glass of water after a few bites. The tester noted they wouldn't want to eat more than two slices in one go.
Sainsbury's garlic slices, costing £1.70 for nine, looked promising with oozing garlic butter. But after cooking according to instructions, they turned out soggy and lacking in flavour, described as 'meh'. The tester suggested they needed at least 10 more minutes in the oven.
Morrisons' garlic baguette was a strong contender, with good texture and well-proportioned slices. The only criticism was that the pieces were too thick, diluting the garlic flavour. Tesco's baguette, meanwhile, looked thin and devoid of garlic, and was left to last due to low expectations.
