Topps Tiles has launched an everything-must-go sale at its Cheam store ahead of its closure on August 7, as part of a wider programme shutting 23 stores across the UK. The homeware retailer is cutting prices to clear stock, with signs appearing in the window of the branch, which customers had previously described as great with helpful staff.
Closure programme and financial performance
The company confirmed in April it would close an additional 15 stores this year on top of eight previously announced, representing 7% of its estate. The closures are part of significant self-help measures to reduce costs. Topps Tiles chief executive Alex Jensen said the move was designed to support year-on-year growth and provide a stronger financial platform for 2027 and beyond. He cited subdued consumer sentiment, geopolitical uncertainty, and cost inflation as factors.
The retailer has not disclosed the full list of stores closing. All affected sites are under-performing and are expected to shut before the end of October.
Sales dip and acquisitions
In the six months to March 28, Topps Tiles reported a 0.1% sales dip to £142.7 million, with revenues hit by a lengthy competition process and disposal programme following its 2024 acquisition of rival CTD Tiles. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) investigated the takeover and required Topps Tiles to offload several branches over competition concerns. In December 2025, the firm also bought rival Fired Earth out of administration for £3 million.
The closures reflect a wider trend of retailers reducing their high street presence, with companies like WHSmith focusing on airports and travel hubs, and banks such as Santander and Lloyds closing physical branches as customers shift to online services.
