A tiny shack in Cardiff has become the highest-rated restaurant on TripAdvisor in the city, according to its owner. The shack, measuring just 6ft by 6ft, serves gourmet burgers and has earned the top spot among Cardiff's eateries.
From Hobby to Top-Rated Eatery
The shack, called Burgers & Shakes, is run by 34-year-old James Thomas. He started the business as a hobby during the pandemic, serving burgers from a small shack in his garden. After positive feedback from friends and family, he decided to turn it into a full-time venture.
Within months, the shack gained a loyal following and now has over 1,000 reviews on TripAdvisor, with an average rating of 5 stars. Thomas said he was "shocked" to see his shack ranked number one out of over 1,000 restaurants in Cardiff.
What Makes It Special?
The menu is simple: burgers, fries, and milkshakes. Thomas uses locally sourced ingredients and makes his own buns and sauces. The shack has no seating; customers order at a window and eat standing or take away. Despite the limited space, Thomas manages to produce high-quality food quickly.
"It's just me and one other person working here," Thomas said. "We make everything fresh to order. I think people appreciate the quality and the personal touch."
Impact on the Local Food Scene
The success of Burgers & Shakes has put Cardiff's street food scene on the map. Local food bloggers and critics have praised the shack for its innovative approach and consistent quality. Thomas hopes to expand to a larger location but wants to maintain the charm of the original shack.
"I never expected this. It's amazing to see people queuing up for my burgers," he added.
