Storm Boelo: Heavy Rain and 80mph Winds to Hit Wales and UK

Storm Boelo is set to be felt across Wales and the UK on Saturday, as another deep area of low pressure moves in from the Atlantic. The Met Office says the storm is expected to arrive at around dawn in Wales, bringing patchy rain, with some heavy bursts, and strengthening winds, which will gradually worsen through the day. It comes a day after Storm Austen battered the country with high winds.

What to Expect on Saturday

The forecasting agency says to expect more "unpleasant" weather on Saturday afternoon with persistent heavy rain, strong winds and gales possible. Rainfall first hit the west of Wales at around 6am, whilst also affecting the south of the country across Cardiff and Swansea. Wind gusts at 9am will be the strongest on the Pembrokeshire coast, reaching 45mph at St Davids.

Met Office Warning

Met Office deputy chief forecaster, Mark Sidaway, said: "Saturday morning will start dry and bright in the east of the UK, however further west rain and increasingly windy conditions will already be set in as people wake up for the day. This stormy weather will continue to move eastwards bringing rain and windy conditions to all of the UK."

"There are a number of severe weather warnings issued for Storm Boelo, including an Amber warning for all of mainland Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland and the very far north of England. Gusts could reach up to 80mph in places. More widely gusts will still reach 50-60mph and spells of heavy rain could also lead to some impacts."

"People should prepare by securing loose items outside their property, being ready in case of power outages and being aware of likely travel disruption."

Marathon Cancelled

This weekend's Marathon Eryri has been called off due to severe weather conditions. North Wales was battered on Friday by Storm Austen, with weather warnings in force throughout the day and more wet and windy conditions set to follow today. The storm has resulted in train cancellations and fallen trees as fierce gale-force winds and torrential rain hit different parts of Wales.
