Tesco has launched a limited-edition birthday cake sandwich, sparking mixed reactions online. The sandwich, which contains strawberry jam, soft cheese, vanilla frosting, and sprinkles between slices of brioche-style white bread, is priced at £3 and available in 1,000 stores for four weeks.
The sandwich marks the 30th anniversary of Tesco's Clubcard. It contains 31g of sugar (35% of an adult's recommended daily intake) and 8.4g of saturated fat (42% of the recommended daily intake), with 515 calories. Despite being a dessert sandwich, it can be included in Tesco's meal deal for £4.
Social media reactions have been divided. On Reddit, one user commented, 'Birthday cake is not a flavour,' while another suggested creating such a sandwich should be a criminal offence. A third wrote, 'The Earl of Sandwich did not intend this to happen. Bet he's rolling in his grave.' On TikTok, some users compared it to a jam sandwich, with one saying, 'If you love a jam sandwich, it's literally that – but elevated.'
Tesco brand manager Violaine Barthe said, 'With 3.1 million sandwiches sold in Tesco each week, sandwiches make up a big proportion of Clubcard purchases and so there was only one way to celebrate Clubcard turning 30. The birthday cake sandwich is a celebration not to be missed.'
