A taste test of seven cornflake brands has crowned Tesco and Morrisons own-label products as superior to Kellogg's, offering better flavour and value. The test, conducted by Parul Sharma of GAU, pitted Kellogg's against own-brand cornflakes from Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, M&S, Morrisons, and Asda, judging on flavour, crunchiness, and value for money.
Kellogg's: The Benchmark
Kellogg's cornflakes scored 4/5 for their nostalgic flavour and sweetness, but at £2 for a 250g box (equivalent to £8 per kg), they were the most expensive option. Despite having the lowest calorie count at 378kcal per 100g, the cost was a drawback.
Tesco and Morrisons: Joint Winners
Tesco's own-brand cornflakes, priced at 95p for 500g (£1.90 per kg), were described as the second crunchiest and most reminiscent of Kellogg's in flavour, earning a 4/5 rating with an edge for price. Morrisons' offering, at £1.90 for 500g (£3.80 per kg), was the crunchiest and had a darker, more bitter taste, also scoring 4/5. Both were deemed excellent alternatives.
Other Brands: Mixed Results
Waitrose's cornflakes (£1 for 500g) scored 3/5, lacking crunch but offering acceptable flavour. M&S's one-ingredient cornflakes (£2.65 for 325g) were a stark departure, resembling puffcorn and scoring 1.5/5. Sainsbury's (£1.15 for 500g) were thin and less crunchy, with an artificial taste, earning 2.5/5. Asda (£1.15 for 500g) were bland and thin, scoring 2/5 and placing last.
Verdict
Sharma declared a tie between Tesco and Morrisons, with Tesco slightly ahead due to its lower price. She concluded that switching from Kellogg's to either own-brand would save money without sacrificing quality. The test highlights that supermarket own-brands can rival established names in both taste and cost.
