Supermarket Hummus Taste Test: Lidl, Co-op, Morrisons Compared
Supermarket Hummus Taste Test: Lidl, Co-op, Morrisons

Hummus is a delightful food option, whether enjoyed as part of a main dish or as a convenient snack. While homemade hummus is undoubtedly tasty, it is often much simpler to grab a tub at your regular supermarket.

The Taste Test

Nearly every supermarket stocks its own selection, from plain varieties to hummus featuring jalapeño or caramelised onions. As an avid hummus enthusiast, I set out to sample a selection of basic supermarket hummus pots to establish which comes out on top.

Gathering tubs from Lidl, Morrisons, and the Co-op, I also bought Ramona's hummus to see how these measured up against my preferred brand.

Ramona's Hummus

Before this taste test, my go-to among supermarket hummus products was Ramona's, and while other appetising tubs exist, this continues to reign supreme. At £3.50, it is hardly the most budget-friendly choice on the market.

That said, while you might need to spend slightly more, Ramona's Hummus possesses that extra depth of flavour compared to other supermarket alternatives, particularly among the selection of plain hummus varieties. Beyond their plain 'heavenly hummus', Ramona's also provides jalapeño, red pepper, and beetroot varieties for those seeking something slightly different.

Morrisons Hummus

Priced at £1.49, Morrisons' classic hummus is undoubtedly a more affordable alternative to Ramona's; though it remains pricier than Lidl's product, which I found considerably more enjoyable. Morrisons' hummus was rather uninspiring and undoubtedly one of the weaker offerings I have sampled.

While I might pick it up again in a pinch if Morrisons were my only nearby option, it is certainly not worth a special trip — and even when shopping there, I would likely reach for an alternative brand.

Lidl Hummus

Lidl's hummus was the most affordable at just 95p, and despite not being the finest on offer, it is a product I would happily pay more for. It boasted more flavour than the Morrisons option, though it fell slightly short of Ramona's or Co-op's offerings.

While not quite the most flavoursome, Lidl's hummus was wonderfully smooth, making it an ideal accompaniment to carrot sticks.

Co-op Hummus

In my opinion, Co-op came out on top among the own-brand hummus contenders, though it still did not quite reach the heights of Ramona's. Priced at £1.40, it was considerably more affordable and is absolutely one I will be returning to.

Bursting with flavour, the hummus was velvety smooth while maintaining just the right consistency — perfect for serving alongside carrot, cucumber, breadsticks, or whatever else you fancy dipping.
