CarGurus' UK Editorial Director Chris Knapman has advised that selling a car in June or July could yield a better price, as dealerships are more motivated to meet quarterly targets and heatwaves reduce buyer competition. However, he cautioned that the optimal timing depends on the vehicle type.
Why June and July Offer a Selling Advantage
Knapman explained that sales executives often work to quarterly targets, so visiting a dealership towards the end of a quarter, such as in June, could strengthen a buyer's negotiating position. Additionally, during a heatwave, many potential buyers defer purchases for leisure activities, temporarily reducing demand and potentially benefiting those who do visit showrooms.
Vehicle Type Matters for Seasonal Value
For sellers, Knapman highlighted that seasonality significantly affects resale value. SUVs and crossovers tend to fetch higher prices in colder months, making June or July less ideal for selling them. Conversely, convertibles and classic cars see increased demand with warmer weather, making summer the optimal time to sell.
Extreme Heat Warnings and Driving Advice
The UK has experienced temperatures approaching 40°C, prompting Met Office red heat alerts. RAC road and safety spokesperson Rod Dennis advised drivers without effective air conditioning to postpone non-essential journeys or travel during cooler times of day, especially when transporting vulnerable individuals like young children or older adults.
