Sainsbury's shoppers can claim their money back under a lesser-known policy called the "TRY promise", which allows refunds if a product does not meet expectations. The UK's second largest supermarket chain, after Tesco, states on its website that it is "sure you'll love our products", but offers the option to "simply contact us for a refund" should an item fall short.
Sainsbury's adds: "Alternatively, you can use our online refund form. That's the TRY promise!" However, terms and conditions apply.
How the 30-day refund rule works
Shoppers must contact Sainsbury's within 30 days of purchasing or receiving the product. Proof of purchase, such as an order confirmation or a receipt, is also required. For those who change their mind, returns can be requested within 30 days of collecting an item or having it delivered, with the quickest and easiest method being a return to store.
Items must be in original packaging, with tags if applicable, unused, with all original components, and in a re-saleable condition.
What is excluded from the TRY promise
The TRY promise applies only to Sainsbury's branded products and excludes baby food and milk, greeting cards, homeware, toys, TU clothing, fuel, flowers, electrical items, entertainment items, stationery, pharmacy purchases, Sainsbury's magazine, and seasonal general merchandise.
Sainsbury's notes: "This doesn't affect your legal rights if something is faulty or if you decide to cancel your order." Certain products are also barred from "change of mind" returns unless damaged or faulty, including chilled, frozen and other perishable products, sealed video games, DVDs, CDs or opened computer software, items mixed inseparably with others, opened Pokémon card packets or sealed mystery collectables, personalised products, lottery tickets, scratch cards, gift cards, e-top ups and postage stamps, unsealed sealed goods for health or hygiene reasons, newspapers and magazines except subscription contracts, and digital content not on a tangible medium if delivery was accepted at order placement.
