Brian Dillon, Audience Writer, has crowned Sainsbury's salted butter the winner in a head-to-head taste test against Tesco's own-brand block.
Both 250g blocks of salted butter cost £1.99, well below the price of popular brands such as Kerrygold, which can reach £3.30 in British supermarkets.
How the taste test was carried out
Each butter was stored in the fridge as instructed on the pack. A small bread bun was cut in half, with one half receiving a generous amount of Tesco's salted butter and the other the same amount of Sainsbury's. A palate cleanser was used between the two tastings to keep the flavours from influencing each other.
The winner: Sainsbury's
Sainsbury's British Butter (Salted) made a lasting impression. The texture was lovely and smooth when bitten into a generous dollop on a bread roll. That creaminess is what makes a really good butter, and it would be delicious melted over toast or a jacket potato.
The real treat was the level of saltiness, which was just slightly more present than in Tesco's salted butter.
Tesco takes second place
Tesco's entry was also delicious, and Dillon said he would be happy to buy it again. The Tesco British Salted Block Butter 250G had the same smooth, creamy texture as Sainsbury's, giving a proper sense of indulgence. However, the saltiness was not as present, which left it behind Sainsbury's.
Since both blocks are among the cheapest on the market, Dillon would be happy to get either again, but his preference is definitely Sainsbury's.
