Sainsbury's has introduced three new chocolate bars under its own brand, the Milk Chocolate Twists, in a bid to compete with offerings from M&S and Tony's Chocolonely. The 140g bars retail at £2.75 each and come in three flavours: Candied Orange, Crispy Butter Biscuit and Popping Candy Shortcake, and Brownie Pieces, Crunchy Caramel and Salted Butter Caramel.
New range marks a shift for Sainsbury's
The Milk Chocolate Twists feature colourful packaging and are described on the Sainsbury's website as 'unapologetically indulgent' and finding the 'sweet spot of classic comforts'. The product listing for the Brownie and Caramel edition adds that 'this bar isn't here to blend in.'
This marks a new venture for the supermarket, which until now has only released simpler own-brand bars such as toffee biscuit, chewy caramel, and nutty nougat.
Shoppers react online
The new bars have already appeared on the NewFoodsUK Facebook page, where shoppers have shared their reactions. Paula Bowen said they were 'similar to the ones in M&S,' while Nicole Pomfrett gave a convincing 'hell yeah.' On Instagram, @mary.monk.art said it 'sounds like Dairy Milk Marvellous Creations but better,' while @lauraj_greenhome described the bars as 'interesting.' Meanwhile, @deano_bs said he was 'def gonna try the dark choccy one,' and @demthesheriff simply wrote, 'yummy.'
In other chocolate news, a bar from the 1980s has made a comeback: Cadbury Moro Gold bars are being sold at B&M for 80p each, imported from Australia and reminding shoppers of a long-lost Irish treat. After Eight has also introduced a new orange flavour, its first new flavour in 64 years, with no mint involved. The 200g pack retails for £4 at Morrisons and Tesco, or £2.50 with a Tesco Clubcard.
Other festive chocolate offerings
For those already thinking of Christmas, M&S's Big Mix, which went viral last year, is back. It costs £7 for a 650g carton or £12 for a 1.2kg tin and features a mix of 10 different sweets in colourful wrappers, suitable for vegetarians. The selection includes Salted Caramel, Coffee Truffle, Hazelnut in Caramel, Cream Toffee, Milk Crème, Caramel Fudge, Strawberry Crème, Orange Crème, Biscuit in Caramel and a Butterscotch Éclair.
