Sainsbury's is offering eligible customers up to £18 in eGift cards through its £3 weekly Healthy Start top-up scheme, which runs for six weeks in the lead-up to Christmas.
The initiative is designed to help low-income families buy fresh, frozen, and tinned healthy food staples. Those who qualify receive a £3 eGift card by email each week for six weeks, from 18 November through to Christmas, totalling £18 per family.
Who qualifies and how to apply
Shoppers in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland who are enrolled in the NHS Healthy Start scheme and have previously scanned their Nectar card alongside their Healthy Start card at Sainsbury's are eligible.
Customers can use the eGift cards to buy fresh, frozen, tinned, or dried fruit and vegetables, as well as beans, lentils, chickpeas, and other pulses. To apply, shoppers must register online on the Sainsbury's Healthy Start portal before 11:50pm on Monday, 9 November 2026.
How the eGift cards work
Each £3 eGift card must be redeemed within 7 days of being issued. They cannot be saved up or combined into a single larger voucher. The vouchers can be used both in-store and online at Sainsbury's.
Currently, no other major UK supermarket has matched or announced a similar top-up scheme for this season, making Sainsbury's the only retailer offering the extra boost. It is the first supermarket to reinstate a voluntary Healthy Start top-up since the NHS transitioned the welfare benefit from paper coupons to digital prepaid Mastercards.
Public response and calls for expansion
Many people are spreading the word about the scheme online, with groups like The Food Foundation sharing the news on platforms such as X and LinkedIn. They are publicly praising the move as a crucial "nutritional safety net" while using the publicity to call on the government and other retailers to expand Healthy Start benefits.
