Exclusive: Romance Bookshop in Cardiff Defies High Street Decline
Aimee Cummings, aged 31, and Charlie Seddon, aged 33, have launched Love Stories Bookshop in Cardiff, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Despite concerns about the high street's vitality, customers are flocking to this unique establishment.
A Paradise for Romance Enthusiasts
Nestled within Cardiff's historic Castle Arcade, Love Stories Bookshop offers an exclusive collection of books focused solely on love stories. This charming shop has quickly become a beloved destination for thousands of visitors since its opening just a few months ago.
While Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14th, this shop proves that romance can be honoured year-round through the pages of a captivating novel. It joins a growing trend of independent bookshops flourishing in Wales, with numbers remaining remarkably high.
Inspired by a New York Adventure
Aimee Cummings shared the shop's origin story, revealing it began with a trip to New York in 2024. During their visit, the couple discovered a romance bookshop that left a lasting impression, though they initially did not act on the idea.
"It got to the start of 2025, and I was just finishing my PhD," Aimee explained. "I was searching for jobs, and nothing stood out to me. I just said to my partner 'we should open a bookshop', as just one of those things people say. Charlie said 'we should do that', and that's how it happened."
To prepare, they visited Book Lovers Bookshop in Edinburgh, where they received invaluable guidance from the supportive staff. Eight months later, they proudly opened their own shop in Wales.
Customer Delight and Personal Service
Aimee expressed her joy at the shop's reception, stating, "It's fantastic. It's been amazing. We couldn't have asked for better. The whole response to the shop has been fantastic." She highlighted the personal touch they offer, allowing customers to come in and discuss their favourite books.
"The love of bookshops is still there. People like to come in and talk about their favourite books," Aimee remarked. "You can come in, and chat to me about your favourite books. If we are able to offer that service, that makes us so happy."
Recent interactions include welcoming a customer who visited as a birthday treat, which Aimee described as "lovely."
Overwhelming Positive Feedback
Customer reactions on the shop's Instagram account reflect widespread enthusiasm. One commenter exclaimed, "A gorgeous bookshop! Congratulations on opening, and I can't wait to make many return trips." Another added, "Such a beautiful bookstore. I can't wait to visit again."
Further praise included messages like, "This makes me so happy! Congratulations on your first day. I can't wait to visit!" and "Yes please! More independent bookshops in Cardiff!" Yet another enthusiast declared, "Such a lovely shop! I can't wait to come back already."
Aimee, a lifelong romance book lover, noted, "I have always been a romance book lover. Even before I realised I absolutely loved them, I was always reading love stories. People have been so kind. We don't have many independent bookshops in Cardiff."
The success of Love Stories Bookshop demonstrates a vibrant demand for niche, independent retail experiences, challenging narratives of high street decline and celebrating the enduring appeal of physical bookshops.
