Orlando Gill, the Paraguay goalkeeper who shone at the 2026 World Cup, has confirmed that his contract contains a release clause, opening the door for a potential move to Manchester United. The 26-year-old shot-stopper, currently at Argentine side San Lorenzo, stated that he is aware of interest from several clubs but has not yet received a formal offer.
World Cup Heroics Put Gill on the Radar
Gill was named Player of the Match in Paraguay's knockout victories over Germany and France. His penalty shootout heroics against Germany, where he saved spot-kicks from Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade, propelled Paraguay to the Round of 16 in a historic upset. These performances have attracted attention from Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Ipswich Town.
San Lorenzo's Financial Crisis
San Lorenzo, Gill's current club, is battling severe financial difficulties. Argentine newspaper Clarin reports that the club's debt is approaching 100 billion Argentine pesos, approximately £50 million. Gill's potential sale could be crucial in alleviating the crisis. The club reportedly acknowledges that his departure may be inevitable.
Gill has kept 29 clean sheets in 59 appearances for San Lorenzo, and manager Nestor Gorosito is already considering replacements. According to Clarin, Gill's release clause stands at around £5.2 million, a fee that could prove a bargain if his World Cup form translates to the Premier League.
Gill Addresses His Future
Upon returning to Paraguay after the World Cup, Gill commented on the transfer speculation: "I can't say yes or no. They told me there is interest, but not a formal offer. I don't want to get carried away. We'll sit down and speak with the club to see what is best." He added, "I have a clause in my contract and I think it has to be respected. Then it depends on the club. If it's good for both parties, we'll have to reach an agreement."
Manchester United's Goalkeeping Situation
Manchester United, managed by Michael Carrick, are in the market for a goalkeeper to compete with Senne Lammens, as three shot-stoppers are set to leave the club this summer, according to the Manchester Evening News. Gill's availability at a relatively low cost makes him an attractive prospect.
