The Angel Inn, a new Victorian-style pub from the 1936 Pub Company, is set to open in mid-August on Bold Street, taking over the site of the former Maggie May's cafe. The pub's owners describe it as "the first ever true pub on Bold Street," aiming to bring a traditional boozer to a street known for its diverse retail and dining.
Maggie May's Closure
Maggie May's, a beloved cafe that operated for 30 years, closed its doors on Christmas Eve 2025. Owners Carly Lea, 52, and her family cited the demands of running the business as they aged, saying, "It’s really sad in lots of ways that we’re going, but it just feels like the time is right." The cafe was known for its warm yellow lighting, green tartan tables, and nostalgic menu sign.
Victorian Revival
The 1936 Pub Company, which also runs The Vines, The Masonic Arms, and The Monro, has worked to restore 19th-century features uncovered during renovations. A spokesperson said, "As we began to work on the old Maggie’s site, we were able to reveal many 19th-century features lost to time." Owner Rob Guttmann sourced a 10-metre-long original Victorian back bar and counter, which will serve as the pub's centrepiece. The venue will also feature ornately scripted 19th and early 20th-century pub mirrors.
Local Ales and Design
The Angel Inn will have entrances on both Bold Street and Wood Street, and will offer a rotating selection of up to 10 cask ales from local brewers, alongside curated craft choices. The pub aims to provide an authentic 19th-century pub experience, with period architectural salvage and antiques sourced from across the country. Rob Guttmann will discuss the design process on an upcoming episode of 'The Pub Crawlers' podcast.
