Morrisons launches UK-first automated Click & Collect lockers

Morrisons is trialling StrongPoint's automated Click & Collect locker technology at its Skipton store in North Yorkshire, marking the first time the system has been used by a UK supermarket. The pilot is designed to improve customer convenience, increase collection availability, and streamline order handovers.

While grocery locker technology has been common across Europe for more than a decade, this is its debut in the UK retail market. The Skipton store, a high-volume site with a full online offering, will now process all Click & Collect orders—including same-day collections—through the locker system.

Extended hours and faster pickups

The switch to lockers brings immediate benefits for local shoppers, according to the company. Operating hours for Click & Collect at Skipton have been extended by two hours per day. Customers no longer need to park in designated collection bays, alert staff to their arrival, or wait for an employee to bring items to their vehicle.

Orders are loaded into the lockers before arrival, and customers collect them by entering a unique six-digit code on the terminal screen. Orders are now pre-packed into paper bags, removing the previous need for customers to pack loose items themselves.

Handles all order sizes

The hardware accommodates orders of all sizes, from quick top-ups to full weekly shops. Larger compartments hold up to three bags of shopping, while smaller chilled or frozen compartments hold one to two bags. For larger cross-category orders, the system automatically assigns multiple locker doors to a single customer code.

Temperature-controlled units keep chilled products at 3°C to 5°C, frozen products at -18°C to -20°C, and ambient grocery units at 16°C to maintain freshness.

Company reactions

Charlotte Exell, group online director at Morrisons, said: "We know customers want Click & Collect to be quick, convenient and flexible, and our new locker solution is designed to be exactly that."

"By bringing StrongPoint's proven technology to our stores, we can offer more collection slots while removing the wait for colleagues to bring orders to customers' cars. We're excited to bring a simpler, more seamless Click & Collect experience to our Skipton customers."

Alex Eveleigh, SVP UK and Ireland at StrongPoint, said: "We are extremely proud to be bringing Morrisons customers a faster, easier way to collect their shopping."

"Picking up from a grocery locker is the fastest way to collect a Click & Collect order, and it makes the service easier for retailers to run while giving customers more flexibility over when they collect. It's a real win for both."
