An online car buying platform has listed the best value cars to drive in the UK, as voted on by the public who actually drive them. The survey, conducted by motoring publication Carwow, polled over 100,000 motorists as part of its latest Driver Power survey to find out which vehicle they considered the best value car in the country to live with.
MG HS Takes Top Spot
Coming in first was the Anglo-Chinese MG HS, a hybrid electric SUV that can also come in plug-in hybrid form. Drivers praised its practicality, price, comfort, and fuel efficiency. Discussing the vehicle, Carwow said: “Taking the top spot is the MG HS. This SUV is spacious, well-equipped, and comes in a plug-in hybrid version with fantastic electric range. However, it’s not very fun to drive, and the infotainment is fiddly. That hasn’t stopped owners from praising its value for money, though.”
Dacia Models in Second and Third
Coming in second behind the MG were a pair of Dacias. In second was the Romanian manufacturer’s Sandero hatchback, praised for being practical and easy to drive, but it lost marks for lack of some technology and the entry model being rather basic. In third was the Sandero’s bigger sister, the Duster SUV, considered good value for money for a family car. It gained marks for having some actual ability to go off road, but lost marks for not having a plug-in hybrid version available.
Rising Cost of Driving
Carwow’s Driver Power survey and the emphasis on value for money came after drivers were once again hit with the peril of a higher cost of driving after Donald Trump resumed strikes on Iran earlier this month. The attacks sent the price of oil rising again, pushing the cost of filling up a car to levels not seen since the middle of June.
In a statement on July 24, the RAC’s head of policy Simon Williams said: “With oil breaching the $100-mark (£75) for the first time in two months, prices at the pumps have surged again since yesterday, taking the cost of filling up back to a level last seen in mid-June – something we all hoped we’d seen the back of…. Unless the hostilities end soon, it's hard not to see the price of petrol reaching a new Iran war high.” Fortunately for Mr Williams and Britain’s motorists, the hostilities were put on hold, although Trump has warned the US could go back to using the military again if diplomatic efforts with Iran fail.
