Matalan has confirmed the closure of its city centre store in Newport, South Wales, with the branch shutting for good on Saturday, October 24. The retailer, founded in 1985 and operating over 200 sites across the UK, said the dedicated clearance store will close its doors for the final time later this month.
The Newport branch, which sells excess stock and out-of-season items at reduced prices, has launched a closing down sale with an additional 30% off all stock. Shoppers have been advised to arrive as early as possible, as the store is expected to be busy ahead of the closure date.

Local shoppers have reacted to the closure, with many expressing sadness and wishing staff well for the future. Jayne Horne said: "Fabulous team and a great store, will be sad to see you go." Katie Groves-Bond added: "Its so sad, I really loved my time working there. Sending love to all the staff, you're all super stars and i wish you all the best xx."

New store to open nearby
A new full-price Matalan is set to open at Mendalgief Retail Park in Newport in November, located just under three miles from the current clearance branch at Newport Retail Park on Seven Stiles Avenue. The closure follows other Matalan stores shutting for good in 2026, including branches in Leeds, Carlisle and Sheffield. The megastore at South Lakeland Retail Park in Kendal closed on April 7.
Matalan has around 175 stores in England, 24 in Scotland, 14 in Wales, and six in Northern Ireland. It also operates an online store and some international outlets.
