Manchester United have firmly rejected any notion of selling Mason Mount this summer, despite a reported £21.5 million bid from AC Milan. The Serie A giants, now managed by former United boss Ruben Amorim, were thought to be keen on reuniting with the England international.
Amorim's admiration for Mount
Amorim, who had a difficult tenure at Old Trafford, has always been complimentary of Mount's abilities and how he fits into his preferred 3-4-3 formation. However, persistent injury problems limited Mount's availability under Amorim, and the Portuguese manager never fully got the chance to deploy him as desired. Despite this, Amorim remains a fan and was reportedly keen to bring Mount to Milan.
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United have no intention of selling Mount this summer, and the player himself is not pushing for a move. Instead, Mount has been training in Spain during the summer break, following an individual fitness programme to ensure he is fully prepared for the upcoming season.
Mount's pre-season plans
Pre-season training for some Manchester United players begins on July 9, with Mount expected to be involved. Injuries continued to hamper him last season, but his 23 Premier League appearances were the most he has managed in any of his three campaigns with the club. While it seems unlikely he will become a regular starter under manager Michael Carrick, his versatility—able to play centrally, as a number 10, or out wide—is seen as a key asset.
Midfield revamp at United
Manchester United are undergoing a midfield overhaul. Casemiro left on a free transfer, and a deal has been agreed to bring in Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta. Another midfielder is expected to arrive, with names like Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and Alex Scott from Bournemouth being linked. However, plans have been complicated by a serious knee ligament injury suffered by Manuel Ugarte while playing for Uruguay at the World Cup. Ugarte was expected to be sold this summer, but his injury means he is likely to stay at Old Trafford, limiting funds available for further midfield additions.
Busy season ahead
United return to the Champions League next season and hope for deeper runs in domestic cup competitions, meaning a much busier schedule. Mount's versatility and experience could be crucial in a squad that will need depth across competitions.
