A fire broke out at Westfield Stratford City shopping centre in London on Saturday afternoon, prompting the evacuation of the complex. The London Fire Brigade dispatched 10 fire engines and a 32-metre turntable ladder to the scene, where multiple vehicles were ablaze on an upper level of the multi-storey car park.
Social media users inside the shopping centre shared images of people being evacuated, while West Ham United supporters heading to the London Stadium for a 5.30pm match against Tottenham Hotspur posted pictures of the fire. The fire brigade received 35 calls about the incident, with the first coming in at 4.05pm.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters have been called to a fire at a multi-storey car park at Westfield Shopping Centre on Montfichet Road in Stratford. A number of vehicles are currently alight on an upper level of the car park. The fire has been producing a significant amount of smoke and we're advising people to avoid the area at this time.”
The blaze was brought under control by 5.54pm, and an investigation into its cause has been launched. No injuries have been reported.
