Lidl is launching a new budget-friendly gadget designed to tackle one of the most frustrating problems of autumn and winter. As part of the supermarket's upcoming 'Cleaning' Middle Aisle range, shoppers will be able to get their hands on a new £9.99 gadget that helps with a common issue millions face.
Why Shoes Get Smelly in Winter
Smelly shoes are a common problem in autumn and winter due to sudden shifts in footwear choices and changing environments. As the weather cools, people trade breathable, open-season footwear for heavy leather boots, synthetic trainers, and insulated waterproof shoes.
These enclosed styles restrict airflow, trapping the sweat your feet naturally produce. When you combine this trapped moisture with heavy winter socks and step into heavily heated indoor environments, your feet begin to perspire even more to regulate their temperature.
This creates a warm, dark, and humid environment inside your shoes, which is the perfect breeding ground for naturally occurring skin bacteria that feed on the sweat and release strong, unpleasant odours. Because winter footwear takes much longer to dry, wearing the same pair day after day without giving them a chance to air out completely causes the moisture and bacteria to build up, making winter shoe odour a persistent problem.
How the Silvercrest Dryer Works
Lidl's new Silvercrest Electric Shoe Dryer may help people avoid smelly shoes. The piece of tech is designed to be an easy, affordable way to keep footwear dry, fresh, and free of bad odours.
The new Silvercrest gadget tackles this problem directly at the source. Instead of just masking bad smells with perfumes or sprays, it eliminates the moisture that bacteria need to survive.
In the product description, Lidl says: "Stops odours developing by drying out moisture. Even heat distribution through 1500 air holes."
Features and Safety
The device features an extendable design that slides directly into any pair of shoes or boots, fitting sizes from a UK 2 upward. Once plugged in, the dryer uses a steady, controlled heat of 56°C.
It pushes warm air through 1,500 tiny air holes to evenly dry the inside of the footwear. Because it maintains a safe, constant temperature, it thoroughly dries shoes without damaging delicate materials like leather or glue.
The gadget is built for convenience, featuring a simple timer that can be set for three, six, or nine hours. It also has an automatic shut-off function, meaning users can safely leave it running overnight. While it does not use advanced UV lights to kill existing bacteria, its ability to quickly dry out wet boots makes it a highly effective preventative tool.
