Lidl to Open New Didcot Store, Creating 40 Jobs

Lidl has confirmed plans to open a new supermarket in the UK town of Didcot, Oxfordshire. The German supermarket giant submitted planning applications in 2025 for the site on Abingdon Road, which will become its ninth store in the county. The development, submitted by Martin’s Development A1 Limited, is expected to create around 40 new local jobs.

Investment and Community Impact

Lidl GB stated: “We’ve seen demand for our affordable, high-quality products continue to rise in Oxfordshire, and we are committed to serving more communities in the area. Our new store will create around 40 new jobs and build on our continued growth. We’re excited to be a step closer to opening this store and thank everyone who has supported us on our journey so far.”

The new store is part of Lidl’s commitment to investing over £600 million to strengthen its store network and unlock regional growth across the UK. Ryan McDonnell, CEO at Lidl GB, said: “As we grow, we want to positively impact our British communities. We’re not just opening doors, we’re unlocking regional growth. Our expansion translates directly into high-quality jobs and gives British suppliers the certainty they need to invest in the future. Above all, it advances our social purpose of making affordable, healthy food accessible to everyone.”

Store Features and Design

According to the planning statement, the site will be completely transformed into a large supermarket with multiple parking spaces for cars and bikes, as well as electric vehicle charging points. The statement added: “The site peripherals have enhanced landscaping as well as retaining key areas of existing landscaping – particularly the tree lines to the north and east boundaries. To the rear of the site is the new self-storage development. This has a main building immediately behind the food store and a series of smaller garage-type units in the remaining area of the site. The layout is planned as a one-way system, generally with a two-way system at the main entrance and exit road.”
