The World Drinks Awards has crowned Lidl as the producer of the best Prosecco, Champagne and Crémant in the world. The budget supermarket beat luxury Champagne houses and renowned brands in a blind taste test to scoop all three titles.
I was stunned to learn which UK supermarket had taken the honours, and even more surprised by the price tags Lidl has managed to keep on such celebrated bottles.
A hat-trick of awards for Lidl
Lidl's Allini Valdobbiadene Conegliano Prosecco Superiore Extra Dry DOCG was named World's Best Prosecco. It costs just £7.99. Experts praised its delicate kiwi notes, soft fruitiness and “fluffy bubbles”.
After trying it myself, I agreed with the judges. The fruitiness added a touch of sweetness, while the light bubbles were not too strong or overpowering and didn't hit the back of my throat like some proseccos can. It has everything you want from a bottle of prosecco and can be enjoyed casually or saved for celebrations.
Award-winning Champagne and Crémant
Lidl's Champagne Bissinger & Co. Premier Cru was awarded the World's Best Champagne title. Priced at £24.99, it was praised for its “elegant peach and sherbet lemon notes”. I found it bubbly and light, with a wonderful texture and a delicate taste that wasn't very sweet despite the fruity notes.
Meanwhile, the Marquis de Plagne Crémant de Loire AOC Brut took the World's Best Crémant award. At £8.99, it was my favourite of the three. It offers fresh apricot aromas, a crisp citrus character and vibrant lime notes, with the most fizz of the trio. It wasn't too dry or sweet, striking a perfect balance for me.
After sampling all three bottles, I know exactly where I'm heading next time I want a Champagne or prosecco to enjoy.
