Mini eggs are a beloved Easter treat, but with rising prices and availability issues, shoppers are turning to supermarket own-brand alternatives. A taste test by one consumer has revealed that Lidl's version outshines even the original Cadbury Mini Eggs.
The tester sampled mini eggs from Aldi, Lidl, Asda, M&S, and Cadbury for comparison. Cadbury's 80g bag, typically priced at around £2 (£2.50 per 100g), was praised for its sugary aroma, crisp shell, and smooth chocolate centre. However, the tester noted that it can be hard to find as Easter approaches.
Asda's mini eggs, at £1.12 for 80g (£1.40 per 100g), were described as 'fine but not amazing', scoring 2.5/5. M&S's Mister Choc eggs, at £1.15 for 80g, were criticised for an extremely hard shell that risked breaking teeth, scoring just 1/5. Aldi's Choceur mini eggs, £3.39 for 256g (£1.32 per 100g), were deemed 'mid-tier' with bland chocolate, scoring 2/5.
Lidl's mini eggs, however, were the standout winner. The tester described them as 'massive' with a perfect chocolate-to-shell ratio, a filling that melts in the mouth, and an addictive quality that surpasses Cadbury. At £1.79 for 90g (£1.94 per 100g), they are also more affordable. The tester concluded that Lidl's version is the best substitute for Cadbury Mini Eggs and plans to stock up before Easter.
