Decade-long dream realised as Landy Brew coffee van thrives in Parkgate
Landy Brew coffee van thrives in Parkgate after decade-long dream

Andy and Claire Roberts' decade-long ambition to run a mobile coffee business has become a reality, with their converted Royal Navy Land Rover drawing a steady stream of customers at the Old Baths in Parkgate every weekend.

The couple, from Irby, launched Landy Brew in March while continuing to work their full-time jobs. Andy, 36, is a mortgage and insurance adviser, while Claire, 37, works as a dance and fitness instructor. The idea had been on their minds for around 10 years before they decided last year that the time was right.

Inspiration Behind the Venture

Andy told the ECHO: "We've wanted to do something like this for years, but we kept putting it off because it was never the right time. We love being outdoors and we love coffee, so we wanted to combine the two. The whole business is built around being in nice outdoor locations, along or close to walking routes, where people can grab a coffee and then enjoy their walk."

A stronger financial position and a change in perspective following the death of Claire's brother helped inspire the couple to pursue their dream. Andy added: "It was a big financial commitment, and a couple of years ago we weren't necessarily in a position to take it on. When Claire lost her brother a couple of years ago, it gave us the desire to pursue our dreams a little more."

Unique Vehicle Draws Attention

The business stands out thanks to its distinctive vehicle, a classic Land Rover chosen to reflect the couple's love of the outdoors. Although they had always admired classic cars and Land Rovers, this is the first they have owned - it was originally produced as a special vehicle for the Royal Navy.

Andy said: "We wanted to pick a unique vehicle rather than something you see quite often. We wanted something a little different that tied in with the outdoor feel. The vehicle has become a bit of a hit in its own right, and people come along just to see it."

Growing Customer Base

Since launching, the business has received a warm response, with a growing number of customers returning regularly. Andy estimates that around half, if not more, of their weekend customers are regulars.

He added: "The reaction has been brilliant. We're based in places such as Parkgate, where there are lots of dog walkers. Some people don't necessarily want to go into a café, and some dogs don't like it either, so being able to grab a coffee and stay outdoors works really well. It's lovely to see little communities forming around the van."

On the menu, lattes remain the most popular choice, while hot chocolates are also firm favourites. The couple introduce seasonal specials throughout the year, with autumn offerings including an autumn-inspired latte and a bonfire hot chocolate. Despite the demands of running the van at weekends, the couple make sure their two beagles, Harry and Stan, get to visit them when they can.

Andy added: "It's so rewarding to see a dream you've had for a long time come to life and be so well received. It gives you such a buzz, and I look forward to doing it every weekend. It's really good fun as well."
