Kroger has announced plans to close 60 stores by the end of 2026, with at least 39 locations already shut. The closures span 15 US states, according to the company's first-quarter 2025 earnings release.
Closures already underway
The move is expected to deliver a "modest financial benefit," which Kroger plans to reinvest into the customer experience. Workers at affected stores will be offered jobs at other locations.
Kroger Chairman and interim CEO Ron Sargent said: "We're simplifying our business and reviewing areas that will not be meaningful to our future growth." He added: "Unfortunately, today, not all of our stores are delivering the sustainable results we need."
Affected banners and locations
Kroger has not released an official list of which stores or banners are affected. However, industry publication Grocery Dive had tracked 39 stores slated for closure across nine of Kroger's banners by August 26, 2025.
MassLive, a Massachusetts-focused news outlet, confirmed this month that all 39 identified locations are now closed. The closures span Kroger, Fred Meyer, Fry's Food and Drug, Harris Teeter, Jay C Food Stores, King Soopers, Mariano's, Pick 'n Save, and QFC banners.
Remaining closures
Twenty-one more stores are still to close before Kroger's year-end deadline. Those locations have not been publicly identified.
