IKEA to launch second-hand marketplace in the UK

IKEA has announced it will launch a second-hand marketplace in the UK, where pre-owned products can find new homes. The Swedish furniture giant will create a dedicated platform where customers can connect directly with one another, similar to how second-hand items are bought and sold on Vinted, Depop or eBay.

Customers will be able to buy and sell pre-owned IKEA items locally, making housing renovations more affordable and accessible. Designed specifically for IKEA products, the marketplace will provide everything shoppers need in one place, making it just as easy for sellers to pass on an old favourite as it is for buyers to find a new one.

IKEA’s vision for the platform

An IKEA spokesperson said: “At IKEA, we are always looking for new ways to make life at home even better and help our customers discover products they love.”

“With the launch of IKEA second-hand marketplace in the UK, we’re taking a meaningful step toward creating a destination that simplifies access to pre-owned IKEA furniture.”

The spokesperson added: “Our goal is to make passing on beloved IKEA pieces as seamless as possible. We’re creating a trusted and vibrant space to make it quick and easy for our IKEA Family members to trade directly with one another. We want the process for buying and selling pre-owned IKEA products to be simple, accessible and rewarding.”

Rollout and pilot success

Further information including an official launch date or how customers can participate will become available over the coming months, IKEA has said. The UK launch comes after successful pilots in Spain and Norway, and will be rolled out here shortly. The platform is understood to be for IKEA Family members, who are set to be notified of updates about the upcoming service.
