Greggs has renamed one of its bakes after Prime Minister Andy Burnham referred to it as "that sausage, bean and cheese thing" in an interview. The Newcastle-based chain has now officially adopted the description for its popular Sausage, Bean & Cheese Melt.
Sales double after PM's comment
Sales of the bake have doubled since the interview, as shoppers and No.10 staff queued to sample the Prime Minister's preferred pastry. Digital screens in shops now read: "The Sausage Cheese & Bean Thing as eaten by our Prime Minister."
Burnham approves name change
Andy Burnham took to Instagram yesterday evening to approve of the name change. Warren McCarrick, shop manager at the Greggs outside Number 10 North, said: "Our shop has been buzzing with Mancs getting their hands on Burnham's favourite bake. Sales went through the roof yesterday, cheers, Andy. We thought we'd repay the favour and rename it to what the Prime Minister seems to fondly know it as, that Sausage, Bean and Cheese Thing."
McCarrick added: "We've also dropped off a few outside No.10 North, in case he's too shy to be seen in the queue."
Burnham Bake Bounce expected
Greggs is now braced for a "Burnham Bake Bounce," with sales expected to remain high for the rest of the week. The pastry revelation comes after Burnham revealed that he often picks up policy ideas from chatting to people in the queue at Greggs, with suggestions whispered while waiting for a bake or shared over the bar in a pub frequently inspiring his ideas as a politician.
