Greggs has opened a new shop in Southport today, creating 12 jobs for the local area. The bakery chain's latest outlet is located on Chapel Street and offers its full range of freshly prepared food, including Sausage Rolls, Steak Bakes, Vegan Rolls (Pork Free), and the new chicken roll.

The Southport shop features a modern new look with comfortable seating. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 6:30 am to 7 pm, and Sunday from 8 am to 6 pm.

Regional Impact

Gilian Long, retail operations director for Greggs, said: “Our new shop in Southport has brought 12 new jobs to the local area, as well as providing customers with a modern, convenient new place to experience their Greggs favourites.” Customers can order for delivery through Just Eat and Uber Eats, or use Click + Collect via the Greggs App. The app also includes a loyalty scheme offering a free item after nine qualifying purchases, a free hot or iced drink for new users, and a free sweet treat on their birthday.

Future Expansion Plans

This opening comes as Greggs plans to trial vending machines to expand beyond traditional high street locations, identifying significant growth opportunities in underrepresented areas. The bakery chain believes there is potential to grow to well beyond 3,000 stores, with around 120 net new openings expected in 2026 following 121 net openings in 2025 that brought its estate to 2,739 shops. Locations with untapped potential include petrol forecourts, roadside sites, retail parks, industrial areas, supermarkets, transport hubs, universities, hospitals, and the London Underground.

Greggs is also exploring new retail formats. After a promising response to its first three Bitesize shops—smaller outlets in train stations, airports, and retail parks—the company is now considering unattended retail options. These vending machine-style solutions could allow customers to skip queues and pick up items quickly. Trials of both automated and manual vending formats are expected to begin shortly, according to chief financial officer Richard Hutton.
