Greggs has confirmed that the Vegan Sausage, Bean & CheeZe Melt is “taking a break” from the menu, following fan demands for its return after the renaming of a popular item.
The confirmation comes after the baked goods giant renamed the Sausage, Bean & Cheese Melt to the ‘Sausage, Bean and Cheese Thing’, following an interview with Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Asked to name his favourite Greggs order, Mr Burnham replied, “that sausage, bean and cheese thing”, referring to the popular Sausage, Bean & Cheese Melt. Sales of the item doubled, leading to the renaming.
Fans demand vegan version
Greggs revealed the news on social media, but a number of fans on the post took the opportunity in the comments section to demand the return of a vegan version, known as the Vegan Sausage, Bean & CheeZe Melt.
After being contacted by Reach to ask if the item would be returning to the menu, a Greggs spokesperson said: “We rotate our menu throughout the year to offer newness for our customers.”
“The Vegan Sausage Bean and CheeZe Melt is currently taking a break from the menu. Vegan customers can still enjoy our Vegan Sausage Roll from the savoury counter range.”
Fan reactions and previous description
Fans calling for the return of the vegan version underneath the post were desperate to see it return to the menu. “Hey so can you bring the vegan version back plz,” said one person, which drew plenty of likes. “Bring back the vegan one,” said another.
A third added: “BRING BACK THE VEGAN BEAN AND CHEESE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE THANK YOUUUUU.”
“Please bring back vegan sausage cheese & beans,” said another, while one chimed in: “Bring back the vegan version I beg c.”
Reach has contacted Greggs to ask if the vegan version will be making a comeback. Describing the vegan version from five years ago, Greggs said: “Bursting with delicious ingredients, the all-new vegan bake is a bit of a mouthful - in more ways than one.”
“Designed to mirror the iconic features of the original Sausage, Bean & Cheese Melt, the vegan-friendly version is wrapped in layers of delicious puff pastry. But instead of the classic filling, we’ve loaded with delectable pieces of vegan sausage, grated original and mozzarella flavour vegan cheeZe, and of course tasty baked beans.”
“If you’re drooling just reading this fear not, the new vegan bake will be hitting the shelves of a Greggs near you from the 5th of August.”
Shop manager on renaming
Discussing the renaming of the non-vegan bake earlier this week, Warren McCarrick, shop manager at the Greggs shop outside Number 10 North, said: “Our shop has been buzzing with Mancs getting their hands on Burnham’s favourite bake. Sales went through the roof yesterday, cheers, Andy. We thought we’d repay the favour and rename it to what the Prime Minister seems to fondly know it as, that Sausage, Bean and Cheese Thing.”
“We’ve also dropped off a few outside No.10 North, in case he’s too shy to be seen in the queue.”
