Green light for Irish gambling firm to open Ayr betting shop
Green light for BoyleSports Ayr betting shop

Irish gambling firm BoyleSports has been granted planning permission to open a new betting shop on Ayr High Street, with the company expected to invest £350,000 in the project.

The former Keepsakes gift shop unit, which closed in March 2025, will be converted into the company's second Ayrshire betting shop, following its existing branch in Irvine. The planning application, submitted to South Ayrshire Council, sought a change of use for the ground floor of the property.

Approval Despite Objections

The proposals were approved under delegated powers, despite four objections. The applicant, BoyleSports (UK), has committed to creating up to six new jobs and investing £350,000 in a complete refit of the unit. Edinburgh-based Lichfields acted as agent for the proposals, which relate to the ground floor only.

The building is not listed but sits within the Ayr Central Conservation Area. A supporting statement said the proposals would bring the vacant unit into active use, making a positive contribution to the function of Ayr Town Centre and increasing footfall.

Investment and Jobs

The statement noted that betting offices attract regular, repeat visits, which can support surrounding shops and services through linked trips. It also highlighted the direct investment from BoyleSports, including approximately £350,000 for the fit-out and business rates contributions, as factors that would enhance the vitality and viability of Ayr Town Centre.

The proposal will create three full-time and three part-time jobs, including a part-time cleaner. It is estimated that each new BoyleSports unit creates or supports 26 temporary construction jobs over the six to eight-week construction period, as well as ongoing indirect employment through the supply chain for consumables, waste management and utilities.

Plans and Background

The proposal also includes the installation of three satellite dishes and two AC units on the side elevations of the two-storey element of the building. The applicants said no visual or amenity impact is anticipated and that the units would be appropriately located.

BoyleSports was founded in 1989 by John Boyle and has grown to more than 400 shops in Ireland and the UK, also offering telephone, mobile and online betting and gaming services in Ireland, the UK and international markets.

In approving the plan, with conditions, council papers read: “The proposal would secure the productive re-use of a vacant building within a sustainable town centre location and contribute to the vitality and viability of Ayr town centre through increased footfall and employment opportunities.”
