Dust has a habit of gathering on skirting boards, especially in late spring when pollen season leaves windows open. The gloss paint on skirting boards generates static electricity, attracting debris and making them look dirty within days. But a home organisation expert has shared a simple method to keep them clean for longer.
Caroline Solomon, known online as Neat Caroline, recommends using a tumble dryer sheet to repel dust. “I just grab a dryer sheet and run it along the baseboard,” she said. “The dryer sheet will leave a thin residue that will also prevent future dust.” Dryer sheets neutralise static, which is what causes dust to cling to skirting boards in the first place.
When you wipe skirting boards with a dryer sheet, fabric softening compounds are left behind, creating a smoother finish that stops dirt from sticking. This means grime takes longer to settle, keeping skirting boards cleaner for weeks, depending on how dusty the room is.
To use the hack, start by cleaning the skirting boards with soapy water – adding a few drops of white vinegar helps break down dust. Dry thoroughly, then wipe gently with a dryer sheet. No scrubbing is required. The effect can last a couple of weeks, though it varies if windows are frequently opened or laundry is dried indoors.
