The Duke of York, a well-known pub in Wallsend, North Tyneside, is closing its doors for good this weekend after the brewery sold the building. Landlords Andrew and Dean announced the closure on Facebook on Friday afternoon, prompting an outpouring of support and sadness from regulars.
Closure Announcement and Reasons
The pub, located on High Street West, was listed for sale at £195,000 earlier this year. In their Facebook post, the landlords stated: "The brewery has sold the building and we’ve agreed to vacant early from our lease – it’s a bittersweet feeling." They added that the new owners have other plans for the premises, meaning it will no longer operate as a pub.
The closure reflects broader challenges facing the hospitality industry in the North East, including changing going-out habits, the cost-of-living crisis, and sharp increases in business rates.
Final Weekend Celebrations
The Duke of York will not go quietly, hosting "one last party" over the weekend. Friday night features "Floorfillers Friday" with DJ Connor Sullivan and drinks deals. The landlords urged: "Let's fill the bar one last time, raise a glass to the memories, and party together for one final weekend at the Duke. This isn't goodbye for tonight... it's a celebration of everything the Duke has been to so many people."
Reaction from Regulars
The news has left many gutted. One regular commented: "Can't believe it is actually happening. Can't believe there will be no more duke I love that place and I love dean and Andrew so much." Another said: "A really sad day for the high street."
The closure marks the end of an era for a "proper local" that had been a fixture on Wallsend's high street. The landlords expressed pride in what they achieved, saying: "We are proud of what we’ve achieved and been a part of the buzzing high street."
