Morrisons' milk chocolate digestives, priced at £1.20, have been declared the best-tasting supermarket alternative to the classic McVitie's biscuit, scoring a perfect five-star rating in a blind taste test. The original McVitie's packet costs £1.85, making the Morrisons version 65p cheaper while delivering the same texture and flavour profile.
Test Methodology and Results
Five supermarket brands were tested: Sainsbury's (£1.25), Morrisons (£1.20), M&S (£1.25), Lidl (89p), and Asda (£1.25). Each biscuit was evaluated on taste, texture, chocolate quality, and overall resemblance to McVitie's. The Morrisons biscuit was praised for its 'bitty' digestive texture and strong chocolate flavour, with the tester noting they 'could have eaten the whole pack.'
Detailed Ratings
Asda's version scored 4/5, described as a 'great replica' with a biscuit taste very close to McVitie's, though the chocolate layer was thinner. Sainsbury's and M&S both received 3/5: Sainsbury's had a harder crunch and weaker chocolate, while M&S was crunchier, resembling a Hobnob more than a digestive. Lidl's 89p option scored 2/5 due to a 'cheap chocolate' taste and overpowering sweetness.
Price Comparison
The cheapest option, Lidl at 89p, was the least favoured. Morrisons at £1.20 offered the best value, beating McVitie's on both price and taste. According to the tester, 'The results took me by surprise and may have changed my future biscuit purchases forever.'
