Butcher's microwave bacon hack for crispy rashers in minutes

A Scottish butcher has shared a microwave bacon hack that delivers perfectly crispy rashers in under five minutes, with no greasy pans to wash up afterwards.

Bacon remains a breakfast staple in countless homes, whether accompanying a full English or loaded into a butty. Yet achieving perfectly cooked bacon can prove a messy affair, with hot fat spraying across the hob and pans requiring cleaning afterwards.

While bacon can be prepared in an air fryer, determining when it's properly cooked necessitates frequent monitoring. For those seeking to simplify their morning routine, Scottish butcher Simon Bowie has revealed his bacon-cooking technique, providing a faster, more straightforward approach than traditional hob or grill methods.

The microwave method

The recipe instructions stated: "While giving your bacon a blast in the microwave might not be the first cooking method that pops into your head, it's a great life hack for those mornings when you simply don't have time to get the frying pan out."

This recipe caters for one person, though can readily be scaled up depending on the number of rashers required. It requires under five minutes of preparation and fewer than two minutes of cooking time, considerably faster than using a frying pan.

The sole ingredient needed is three rashers of bacon per person. The recipe instructions added: "Personal preferences for the crispiness of your bacon will determine cooking time, but these simple steps will have a bacon buttie in your hand in a game-changing matter of minutes."

Step-by-step instructions

Begin by placing a sheet of kitchen roll onto a microwaveable plate, which will absorb any excess liquid during cooking. Arrange the required number of rashers across the plate, ensuring they are spread slightly apart from one another. Lay a further sheet of kitchen roll on top to shield the interior of your microwave from any splatter.

Cook on full power for 2 minutes, or approximately 30 seconds per rasher at 900W. The recipe advised: "This is completely personal preference, so we recommend a bit of trial and error."

"This will cook the bacon through but leave it pale and not yet crispy. Fire them in for another 30 to 40 seconds to crisp up the edges."

Once done, remove from the microwave and serve in a roll with your preferred sauce. The butcher's notes concluded: "There you have it. Bacon in a hurry, and no greasy pans to wash up. It's a win-win."
