The battle for America's highways is turning into an all-out gas station war, and Buc-ee's rivals are spending millions in a bid to stop the Texas beaver from dominating the roads. Two of the country's biggest convenience store chains are dramatically expanding across Texas, pouring cash into new stores and massive renovations as competition for drivers, truckers and road-trippers reaches fever pitch.
Love's Travel Stops Invests in Texas Upgrades
Oklahoma City-based Love's Travel Stops and Iowa-born Casey's General Stores are the latest brands aggressively moving into Buc-ee's territory, with fresh filings showing millions of dollars in new investments across the Lone Star State. The latest moves come as Buc-ee's continues its own explosive national expansion, transforming the once-regional chain into a highway empire famous for gigantic stores, endless gas pumps and cult-favorite brisket sandwiches. But competitors are no longer standing by.
Love's Travel Stops - a truck stop giant that has operated for more than six decades - is now investing heavily in Texas upgrades as it tries to strengthen its foothold in key travel corridors. New filings submitted to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation reveal the company plans to spend roughly $6 million renovating two Texas Panhandle locations in Dalhart and Dumas. Each travel center renovation is expected to cost about $3 million and will include major remodeling work along with upgrades to food service offerings. Construction is currently expected to begin in August 2026 and wrap by December 2026, although timelines could change.
Love's already operates nearly two dozen locations across Texas, including stores in Dallas, Beaumont, Seguin and Luling, where it caters heavily to long-haul truck drivers and interstate travelers. Unlike Buc-ee's - which famously bans semi trucks from many of its locations - Love's has built its business around the trucking industry, offering showers, truck maintenance and overnight parking alongside fast food chains including Bojangles, Dunkin, McDonald's and Taco John's.
Casey's Expands with New Texas Stores
Meanwhile, another major rival is charging deeper into Texas at full speed. Casey's has unveiled plans for three brand-new Texas locations as part of a massive statewide growth push that could eventually add more than 150 stores. The chain filed plans for new convenience stores in Waco, Vernon and Paris, Texas, with all three projects carrying a combined estimated construction cost of $1.65 million. Each store will span roughly 5,200 square feet and is expected to break ground in late July before opening by January 2027. The Waco location will become Casey's third store in the city, while the Paris site marks its fifth location there. Vernon, however, will receive its very first Casey's.
The aggressive expansion follows Casey's blockbuster acquisition of Fikes Wholesale Inc - owner of CEFCO convenience stores - in a deal worth more than $1.1 billion that handed the company control of 148 Texas locations. 'Our growth in Texas is an exciting chapter for Casey's,' company COO Ena Williams previously said. Founded in Iowa in 1968, Casey's now operates nearly 3,000 stores nationwide and has become one of the fastest-growing convenience store chains in the country.
Gas Station War Heats Up
The rapid-fire expansion by both Love's and Casey's highlights just how valuable Texas drivers have become in the convenience store arms race. Buc-ee's may still dominate the headlines with its supersized locations and fiercely loyal fanbase, but rivals are now spending aggressively to carve out their own slice of beaver country. And with billions being poured into new stores, remodels and acquisitions, the gas station war shows no sign of slowing down.
