British Cake Firm Shuts After Nearly 400 Years in Business
British cake firm shuts after nearly 400 years

A historic British cake company, Brown's Original Banbury Cakes, has ceased operations after nearly 400 years of trading. The family-run business, based in Banbury, Oxfordshire, was voluntarily dissolved on April 7, according to Companies House records.

End of an Era for Banbury Cakes

Brown's Original Banbury Cakes had been producing its iconic spiced currant pastries since the early 1600s. The company's secret recipe for the oval-shaped delicacies—filled with mixed peel, brown sugar, rum, and nutmeg—had been passed down through generations. For the last three decades, the business was run by family proprietor Philip Brown.

The original shop, located on Parson's Street in Banbury, was demolished in the 1960s and replaced by a house and a Japanese restaurant. Despite this, the cake business continued, later shifting to online sales. The company's dissolution marks the end of a remarkable chapter in British culinary history.

Heritage and Quaker Connections

A local history website details the rich heritage of the long-standing family enterprise. It recounts the story of a conscientious objector from World War I who found employment at the shop after the conflict. The post explains: 'My father had come to Banbury on a month's trial as a manager of E. W. Brown's Original Cake Shop, 12 Parson's Street.'

During the war, he served with the Friends Ambulance Unit in France. Afterward, he worked as a quartermaster at Uffculme Hospital in Birmingham, helping disabled soldiers learn to walk with artificial limbs. When the hospital was taken over by the city, he lost his job. E.W. Brown's, like many Quaker firms, offered work to unemployed Quakers, despite initial doubts from owners Lizzie and Lottie Brown.

He stayed for 20 years, eventually becoming a partner. The post adds: 'He loved the old shop. It was his whole life and he was broken-hearted when the partnership was dissolved in 1941.' The closure of Brown's Original Banbury Cakes thus brings to a close a story spanning centuries, from its Quaker roots to its final days as an online purveyor of a cherished regional treat.
