Bodycare, the UK health and beauty retailer, has confirmed the closure of 42 stores, resulting in 235 job losses. The company entered administration at the start of September, putting the future of its workforce in doubt.
The closures come in two waves: an initial 32 stores shut shortly after the administration announcement, followed by another 30 this week. A spokesperson cited a shortage of stock and high operating costs, stating that continuing to trade all 115 retained stores was no longer viable.
Founded in 1970, Bodycare is known for affordable health, beauty, and skincare products. However, shifting consumer habits and increased online shopping have sidelined the retailer in a competitive market.
In total, 685 of Bodycare's 1,500 employees have lost their jobs. The closures are concentrated in underfunded and neglected areas of the UK, adding to local frustrations.
Bodycare joins a growing list of retailers, including Poundland, Homebase, and New Look, that have announced store closures amid the ongoing decline of the British high street.
