A former Marks and Spencer bakery worker has revealed the optimal times to shop for yellow sticker discounts, advising customers to visit early in the morning or late afternoon rather than at closing time. Katherine McPhillips, who worked at the M&S bakery during her university years, shared insights on how to save money on the retailer's popular food items.
Best Times for Yellow Sticker Bargains
McPhillips recommends visiting M&S as soon as it opens, around 9am, to catch the best discounts. She explained that during her time working there, yellow stickers were typically applied by overnight staff after the store closed, making morning the prime time for bargains. Another good window is between 3pm and 5pm, when shift changes often prompt staff to begin applying reductions.
According to McPhillips, visiting at 4pm is particularly effective for discounted lunch items such as sandwiches and salads. She noted that many shoppers mistakenly assume closing time is best, but retail workers are often too busy preparing for the next day to apply stickers then.
Etiquette for Shoppers
McPhillips cautioned against crowding staff applying yellow stickers, as her manager would halt the process if customers gathered. She urged shoppers to give workers space and be polite, warning that harassing staff over a discounted item is not worth it. She added that reduction times can vary by store, so politely asking a staff member during a quiet period may yield useful information.
“A little courtesy can go a long way,” McPhillips said, “as not only does it make life easier for retail workers, but it might also help you bag a bargain the next time you are hunting for discounted treats.”
