Asda offers free drinks from cafés today to beat the heat

Asda is offering free drinks from its in-store cafés today to help shoppers beat the heat. The supermarket giant is giving away free iced teas or cloudy lemonades on Thursday, August 13, on a first-come, first-served basis while stocks last.

One-day-only offer

The chain said its one-day-only offer gives shoppers a chance to cool down and enjoy a refreshing drink on Asda. The free drink offer is valid only in-store at Asda Café on August 13, with a maximum of one free drink per transaction.

Asda shared the results of new research it commissioned from Censuswide, which showed that on average Brits complain about sweltering temperatures almost six times a day (5.7) once a heatwave hits.

Survey findings

Almost three quarters (74%) of the 2,000 adults surveyed said they've spent longer than usual inside a supermarket or shop during hot weather because it was cooler inside. Those who have done so spent, on average, an extra 22 minutes browsing the aisles, according to the research.

The survey also found many are ditching conventional cooling methods in favour of inventive hacks. This includes working beside a paddling pool (7%) and sitting with wet tea towels draped over their shoulders (17%) to creating makeshift ice baths in wheelie bins (2%).

Heatwave tantrums

Hot weather is putting patience to the test too, with almost one in 10 (9%) parents admitting they have taken their children into a supermarket or shop to escape the heat or head off a heatwave tantrum.

An Asda spokesperson said: "Brits are nothing if not resourceful and when a heatwave arrives everyone seems to have their own tried-and-tested way of cooling down. That's why we're treating shoppers to a free iced tea or cloudy lemonade from our in-store cafés while the heat is on so there's always a simple way to escape it."

Asda's offer is subject to availability, with a limited number of drinks to be given away. Censuswide carried out the research between July 6 and July 9.
