Aldi is launching a new Neon Dog Coat this Thursday, October 22, as part of its upcoming 'Winter Walker' range. Priced at £6.99, the coat is designed to help dog owners keep their pets visible during darker evening walks after the clocks go back on Sunday, October 25, at 2am.
The coat features a soft fleece lining, light-reflective strips, and Velcro fastening. It comes in yellow or orange, with sizes ranging from extra small to large. Aldi says: "Make gloomy days brighter with a burst of neon colour. Designed for comfort and visibility, it's an easy way to keep your dog looking and feeling great outdoors."
Why High-Visibility Matters for Dogs
Keeping a dog visible at night is important because drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians may struggle to see a dark silhouette. Dogs move closer to the ground, can dart unexpectedly, and blend into night-time surroundings.
While UK law does not explicitly require pets to wear reflective gear, a high-visibility coat can help owners avoid fines associated with public space, control, and traffic laws. Local councils and courts hold owners accountable for their dog's behaviour, and a glowing coat provides the visibility needed to stay compliant in the dark.
Potential Fines You Can Avoid
The coat can help avoid fines for dog fouling. Under the Crime and Policing Act 2026, local authorities can issue a Fixed Penalty Notice of up to £500, with fines rising to £1,000 in court if waste is not cleaned up.
It may also help prevent "out of control" public space violations under Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs), which carry fines up to £1,000. These orders cover restricted zones like enclosed playgrounds and requirements to put dogs on leads when ordered.
Additionally, increasing visibility can help avoid road traffic offences under the Road Traffic Act 1988, which can lead to fines up to £20,000 if an unrestrained dog causes a serious accident. A high-visibility coat extends a dog's visibility from 25 meters to over 125 meters, alerting drivers sooner.
