Aldi Smithdown Road reopens with larger space and more self-checkouts
Aldi Smithdown Road reopens after refurbishment

The Aldi store on Smithdown Road reopened today (Thursday July 30) at 8am, following a refurbishment and extension. The supermarket now offers a larger retail space of 1,015 square metres alongside new signage and an increased number of self-checkouts.

New store features

According to Aldi, the new format aims to make shopping easier for customers, with more space and clearer signs. Fresh bread and cakes have been moved to the last aisle to prevent them from getting squashed under shopping, and the store now offers new, easy-to-browse freezers. The number of self-checkouts has increased from nine to 17.

Specialbuys and opening hours

The ‘Aisle of Aldi’ continues to offer Specialbuys, exclusive deals available every Thursday and Sunday. During reopening week, the store offers festival essentials including a Wash Basin Shower (£9.99), 3-Tier Airer (£14.99) and Kitchen Tap (£34.99). The store at 281 Smithdown Road, L15 2HF, is open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 10pm and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.

Store manager Jen Rathe said: "The team and I are really looking forward to welcoming back some familiar faces as well as new customers, and supplying our local community with the everyday amazing products we have available. Hopefully the new-look store will make shopping at Aldi Smithdown Road that bit easier and more comfortable."

Aldi expansion plans

Aldi has identified Croxteth as a priority location for a new store as part of its nationwide expansion. The discounter is actively seeking suitable sites across the UK, with new stores expected to create jobs. Aldi remains the UK’s highest-paying supermarket, with Store Assistants earning from £13.50 per hour nationally and £14.88 within the M25, with pay increasing based on length of service. Aldi has listed 25 priority locations, including Croxteth, and operates more than 1,000 stores across the UK since opening its first store in 1990. The retailer is seeking freehold, leasehold or long leasehold sites in prominent locations with good visibility and access.
