Katherine McPhillips had been a loyal Aldi shopper for years, relying on its reputation as the UK's cheapest supermarket. But a visit to Marks and Spencer changed her mind after she found that many basics were priced similarly or even cheaper.
First Visit Reveals Surprising Price Comparisons
Earlier this year, a friend persuaded her to go to M&S for a birthday cake. Expecting high prices, she was shocked to see a cabbage at 80p, compared to 89p at Aldi. Mushrooms were £1 at M&S versus £1.29 at Aldi, and bread was the same at 75p.
While some items like a chocolate bar were expensive, McPhillips noted that pricier goods tended to be gifts and snacks, not daily essentials.
Weekly Shop Test Confirms Value
The following week, she bought beef mince (£3.75), eggs (£1.85), potatoes (£2.25), blueberries (£2.50), and strawberries (£2.25) at M&S for a total of £12.60. She estimated that would be roughly the same at Aldi.
Better Shelf Life Reduces Food Waste
McPhillips forgot about the berries for five days and found them still fresh. She had previously complained that Aldi produce often spoiled quickly, leading to waste. The longer shelf life at M&S has helped her cut down on food waste, saving money over time.
Though she still has a soft spot for Aldi, she now buys fruit and vegetables from M&S whenever possible, believing it saves her more money in the long run.
