Aldi Loyalist Finds Better Value at M&S for Fresh Produce
Aldi Loyalist Finds Better Value at M&S for Fresh Produce

A long-time Aldi shopper has switched to Marks and Spencer after finding that many basic items cost the same or less, and fresh produce lasts longer.

Surprise at the Fruit and Vegetable Aisle

Katherine McPhillips, a loyal Aldi customer for years, was convinced by a friend to visit M&S for a birthday cake. Expecting high prices, she was instead shocked to find that cabbage cost 80p at M&S compared to 89p at Aldi. Mushrooms were £1 at M&S versus £1.29 at her local Aldi, and bread was 75p at both stores.

While some items, like chocolate bars, were more expensive, McPhillips noticed that the steep prices were mainly on gifts and snacks. Basic groceries were reasonably priced.

A Trial Shop for Essentials

The following week, she returned to M&S for essentials. She bought beef mince (£3.75), eggs (£1.85), a large bag of potatoes (£2.25), blueberries (£2.50), and strawberries (£2.25), totalling £12.60—roughly what she would have spent at Aldi.

She forgot the berries in her fridge for five days and was surprised to find them still fresh, whereas Aldi produce often turned mouldy within a day. The longer shelf life has reduced her food waste and helped her save money in the long run.

A New Shopping Habit

McPhillips still likes Aldi but now goes out of her way to buy fruits and vegetables at M&S when possible. She believes the switch has been more economical overall.
