Money-saving expert Jordon Cox, who calls himself 'Britain’s Coupon King', has shared the best and worst days to shop at discount supermarkets Aldi and Lidl, claiming shoppers are 'missing all the best bargains' on certain days.
In a recent Instagram post, Cox was filmed outside Aldi with text reading 'Worst days to shop at Aldi and Lidl'. He then explained that the best days are Thursdays and Sundays, because those are the days the middle aisles are restocked with items. He advised that shoppers should never go on a Wednesday or Saturday because 'all the good stuff is likely gone'.
Cox's Tips and Voucher Advice
Cox also told his followers in the comments section to keep an eye on the Lidl Plus app, saying he has had £5 off vouchers in the past few weeks. The post received more than 5,000 likes, with one person commenting 'Great tips'.
However, some people said they might avoid Thursdays and Sundays to prevent spending too much. One person joked: 'Yeah I’m going to avoid those days like the plague, I enjoy having money in my bank account.' Another added: 'I'll shop on Wednesday and Saturday when I'm trying to save money then.'
Aldi Workers Respond
Some Aldi workers also shared their views. One wrote: 'I work at Aldi and [Wednesday and Saturdays] are sometimes good days to look as they get us to mark down left over specials on the last day to dirt cheap before they get signed off to charity. I got a parasol for 1.99 once. Sometimes worth a gander.' Other Aldi workers claimed it might be best to avoid Sundays as it is 'so busy'.
How Aldi and Lidl Keep Prices Low
Instead of stocking expensive household brands, around 80% to 90% of the supermarkets' stock consists of high-quality, own-brand equivalents. Stores also carry a curated selection of roughly 1,500 to 4,000 product lines, compared to 30,000+ at traditional supermarkets, reducing storage and staffing overhead. Products are displayed directly in their shipping cartons on pallets, and rapid checkout systems lower labour costs.
Middle aisle deals, known as Aldi's Specialbuys and the Middle of Lidl, rotate twice a week and offer heavily discounted seasonal items, electronics, kitchen appliances, tools, and clothing. Pantry and dairy basics like eggs, milk, canned goods, and baking supplies consistently undercut traditional grocery store prices. Both chains also run weekly produce promotions, such as Aldi's 'Super 6' or Lidl's 'Pick of the Week', heavily discounting select fresh fruits and vegetables.
