Supermarket Chocolate Digestives Put to the Test
Chocolate digestives are a staple in UK households, whether dipped in tea or eaten straight from the packet. While McVitie's is the original milk chocolate digestive, supermarkets have created their own versions at lower prices. A taste test was conducted to find a cheaper alternative that tastes just as good.
Milk chocolate digestives from Sainsbury's, M&S, Asda, Lidl, and Morrisons were tested and rated on a five-star scale. The results surprised the tester and may change future biscuit purchases.
The Contenders and Their Scores
Sainsbury's - £1.25 (3/5): Smaller than McVitie's with a harder crunch and plain biscuit flavour. The chocolate lacked strength, tasting more like milk than chocolate.
Morrisons - £1.20 (5/5): Same size as a standard digestive with iconic pressed lettering. It had the same texture and 'bitty' taste unique to digestives. The chocolate brought more flavour, and the tester could have eaten the whole pack.
M&S - £1.25 (3/5): Crunchier texture than an original digestive, closer to a Hobnob. The chocolate tasted closest to McVitie's, but the biscuit's harshness made it a poor replica.
Lidl - 89p (2/5): Packaging closely resembled McVitie's. The biscuit had a much thicker chocolate layer, but the biscuit itself was plainer, and the chocolate tasted cheap and overpowering.
Asda - £1.25 (4/5): Perfect size and a great replica in looks with a darker biscuit colour. The chocolate layer was thinner, but the biscuit tasted very close to McVitie's, delivering the same aftertaste.
The Winner: Morrisons at £1.20
Morrisons' chocolate digestives scored a perfect 5/5, matching the taste and texture of McVitie's while costing 60p less. The tester noted, 'It has that same texture with what I can only describe as a 'bitty' taste to the biscuit that makes a digestive unique.' A packet of McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives is currently priced at around £1.85, making Morrisons a cost-effective alternative.
