A charity shop employee has recounted discovering a hidden treasure worth £4,000 concealed inside a shabby coat donated to the store. The worker, who shared the story on Reddit, said the coat felt unusually heavy, prompting them to examine the lining, where they found a large collection of Indian gold jewellery.
The discovery came to light after a user on the AskUK subreddit asked about the strangest items found in charity shop purchases. The charity shop worker revealed the jewellery was later sold to a local jeweller for £4,000 six months after the coat was donated.
Other Reddit users shared bizarre finds, including a dead cat in a bag of clothes, a crack pipe in a handbag, and a glass eye inside a chest of drawers. One person found a newspaper clipping reporting the execution of Edith Cavell along with a lock of hair inside an old manicure set.
There were also accounts of money discovered in donations, such as a £20 note in a pair of jeans bought for £3 and €200 in a handbag pocket. While these stories are unverified, they highlight the element of surprise that charity shops can offer.
