Primark Recalls Pepper Mills Over Lead Poisoning Risk

Primark has issued an urgent recall for three models of its brown and green pepper mills after discovering they contain excessive levels of lead, posing a serious chemical risk to consumers. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) published the recall notice, warning that the £8 hand-grinding mills, manufactured in India and sold across the UK, do not meet the REACH Enforcement Regulations 2008.

Recall Details and Customer Instructions

The affected products have model numbers and barcodes: 6772201 / 5397349037640, 6770801 / 5397349037541, and 3022201 / 5397349075604. Primark has recalled the items from end users and advises customers to stop using them immediately and return them to any Primark store for a full refund. For further information, customers can access the Primark Live Chat.

Health Risks from Lead Exposure

The OPSS alert detailed the dangers of lead consumption, stating that short-term exposure to high levels can cause stomach upset, mood changes, poor attention span, headaches, hallucinations, and severe damage to the brain and kidneys. Long-term lower-level exposure may lead to anaemia, high blood pressure, damage to the nervous system, brain, and kidneys, as well as effects on male and female reproduction.

Pregnant women, infants, and young children are particularly sensitive. Lead exposure during pregnancy can result in miscarriage, stillbirths, or premature births. Children exposed in the womb may have a lower IQ, behavioural problems, nerve damage, or delayed growth. Lead can also affect fertility in both men and women.

Consumer Reactions

The pepper mills had gained popularity on social media, with a TikTok user describing them as "Addison Ross inspired." Liverpool-based Fenlon Interiors followers praised the product, with comments such as "so good" and "Neeeeeed."

What to Do If Exposed

The OPSS advises that anyone with health concerns regarding lead exposure should seek guidance from their GP or contact NHS 111. The UK maintains stringent controls on lead levels in water, air, and food to minimise health risks, but this recall highlights the importance of product safety compliance.
