Man Utd to Profit from Greenwood Transfer; Tottenham Rule Out Move

Manchester United are set to receive a significant financial boost from the transfer of Mason Greenwood, who is expected to leave Marseille this summer. However, a return to north London has been ruled out, as Tottenham Hotspur have no interest in signing the forward.

Greenwood's Impressive Record at Marseille

Greenwood has scored 48 goals and provided 17 assists in 81 appearances for Marseille, making him one of the most sought-after players in the current transfer window. Despite reports earlier this month that Tottenham were preparing an approach, football.london has confirmed that the club has no appetite to bring Greenwood to the Premier League.

De Zerbi's Controversial Comments

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi previously praised Greenwood during their time together at Marseille, calling him a "good guy" who had paid a "heavy price" following the dropping of attempted rape and assault charges in 2023. De Zerbi stated, "I don't want to get involved in anyone's private life. All I can see is that Mason seems a good lad; he paid in a strong way for what happened."

These comments sparked backlash from Tottenham supporters. After his appointment at Spurs, De Zerbi issued an apology, saying, "I have never wanted to downplay the issue of violence against women or violence against anyone more broadly. I apologise to those who I offended with this subject matter."

Marseille's Desire to Sell and Roma's Interest

Marseille are keen to offload Greenwood before the end of June. Italian side Roma have expressed interest, with a reported bid of approximately £35 million. However, Marseille are holding out for at least £47 million, according to Corriere dello Sport. Roma may return with an improved offer of around £40 million plus £4.3 million in add-ons.

United's Sell-On Clause

Manchester United retain a 40% sell-on clause from Greenwood's original transfer to Marseille in 2024. If Roma finalise a deal worth £43.3 million, United would receive approximately £17 million, bolstering manager Michael Carrick's transfer budget.
